Imagine what is the big challenge in life as a foreigner who travels or lives abroad? As an international student, order the dishes in the restaurant always a problem and cause trouble for me. When I walked into a restaurant, and the waiter handed me the menu, there was still a word in my mind: "menu panic! Menu panic! ". I always make myself calm down first, and then a new terms exam will wait for me. Yes, it's a word test from an original field!

Food can make people feel the delicious taste of the world. However, also, they bring trouble and hindering people to try new things because of language, culture even regional differences. Vegetable, fruit, and even bread, which I learned in our English textbooks didn't come in handy. Finally, when I Learn to distinguish bagel and croissant, then what is avocado and guacamole? Why are these two meaning so far away?

When I walk into a restaurant, actually I don't want to look like a tourist. Especially some restaurants which it is hard to a reservation or the luxury Michelin restaurant, to hold the mobile phone to search for the strange words, again and again, is the awkward and cumbersome scene for me.


Nowadays more and more people have the chance to travel, study or work abroad. Eat is an essential part of people's lives, it could not only ensure that the primary energy supply for the day, but is also a way for help individuals to understand and Fort, due to language limitations, many people lose the feeling of this fantastic power. Whether on the journey or in daily life, if we can help people to understand the food culture through mobile phone products quickly and efficiently, And then to more comfortable in an environment. This product will benefit many people to save time and improve their quality of life. On the other hand, it would promote the interaction between the business and the customers, thus improving the economic benefit.

It is worth mentioning that, through the analysis of the menu translation software on the market, I found that most of the features of the application of the product remain at the level of translation of words. However, most of them are Ignoring the user's Visual perception of the dishes. In any particular occasions, even if the user gets a name of the explanation, but due to geographical and cultural are difficult, it is still difficult for the customer to link the title to the actual appearance of the dish.

Based on the research of international students and foreign employees, I found that most of the respondents have the same experience as mine. In the study, most of the interviewees mentioned the pain points as a language barrier, menu without a picture and the cognitive difference of the food. Therefor I listed two typical respondents as personas.



Ming is an international student who came from China. In his first period in the U.S, because he is not familiar with American food culture, so order the dishes in the restaurant often bothers him. The food he orders most often is Teriyaki, it is not because Teriyaki is delicious but because it could reduce the risk of mistake.

In the holiday, Ming and his friends traveled to San Francisco. He decided to bring them to Fisherman's Wharf to taste the famous seafood restaurant. However, when Ming saw the variety of kind of food words on the menu but only understanding some basic vocabularies, such as shrimp, crab, clam. So he had to take some of the food which he could understand the meaning. As a result, they only eat shrimp salad and some fish and fries. Worse, because there is no detailed understanding of food ingredients, one of his friends had an allergic reaction for hazelnut. Therefore, it made the trip worse and made him feel sorry for his friend.


Adam is a Canadian, who work and travel around China, he likes Chinese food very much. However, when he comes to some Chinese restaurants, he often gets embarrassed. A lot of Chinese menus are not applying the English explanation for the dishes. Some other lists which involve the English translation next to the Chinese names, but due to cultural differences, it 's hard to let him imagine the looks. For example, in the menu, there was a dish called Tiger dishes, it is the cold dishes which made of pepper, parsley, and other vegetables because it tastes very spicy and vigorous as the tiger. However, if he follows the understanding of the text, Adam actually cannot accept the tiger made dishes. Therefore, assume that he could see how it looks like, maybe he won't miss the chance to taste the traditional Chinese delicacy.


Through the above analysis of the user pain points, I try to sort out and design a targeted solution in the production model.

First of all, the design of this product base on the lightweight design. Because through the study of the users, many responses would like to be able to show they are looks very decent. In a strange environment, use the translation software to search the unknown words frequently is not only waste time but also make users feel uncomfortable. Therefore, a lightweight application allows users to short the time of translation. The user only needs to set the default language in the first login the interface, then all the words that appear in the future will be translated into the default language.


Secondly, the lightweight design also reflected in the operation of the product. That replaces the translation method from the traditional word typing to the take picture. The system will automatically generate a new translucent floating layer on the menu photo to display the contents of the menu translation. The system will automatically create a new translucent floating layer on the original menu picture which shows the conversion. On the other hand, through to lightly touching the floating layer, the user could switch the language state between the original menu and the translation menu. This feature makes users to more accurately understand what the translated dishes is from the original menu.


At last but not least, considering some users prefer to reading the traditional pictures menu, I decided to set the button of pictures menu on the top of right corner on the screen. When the user clicks on the image reading mode, the system will automatically grab the relevant dish pictures from the Internet and appear as the traditional menu on the screen. Through the image display feature, the user could have an explicit sensory cognition for the unfamiliar dishes.
